Behind the Lights: The Story of Manukau & Auckland Diwali

Every light on that Diwali stage tells a story — but behind the glow is an entire world of planning, people, and pure chaos that most never get to see.

Organising Manukau and Auckland Diwali was one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my career. Over 3,000 performers, dozens of cultural groups, community organisations, food vendors, sponsors, media, and government partners — all coming together to celebrate a festival that means so much to so many.

But with every spectacular moment came its share of complications. From navigating endless paperwork and compliance requirements to balancing cultural authenticity with city regulations, every decision carried weight. There were times when logistics felt impossible, schedules collided, and last-minute changes tested everyone’s patience. Yet somehow, the show always went on.

What kept me grounded was the why behind it all — creating a space where families could celebrate, communities could connect, and New Zealand could witness the magic of South Asian culture at its finest.

Standing backstage, watching thousands of lights flicker across Aotea Square and Due Drop Centre, I realised something powerful: the best events aren’t the smoothest ones — they’re the ones that demand your everything and give you even more in return.

Diwali taught me resilience, leadership, and the art of staying calm in the storm. But most of all, it reminded me why I do this — to bring people together, one story, one stage, one celebration at a time.
